This course is intended to give attendees a clear understanding of what steps are necessary to obtain information for a sufficient domestic violence investigation. The instructor, Merydith Easter, will discuss the dynamics of a domestic violence relationship, show examples of common domestic violence related injuries, and provide examples of types of evidence to be collected to corroborate a victim’s statements.
The course covers the evidentiary rules used in a courtroom to provide an understanding of what information is required so that prosecutors may proceed with evidence-based prosecutions. Moreover, Easter will walk attendees through common mistakes and issues which arise out of domestic violence investigations.
The course includes a video clip of a domestic violence assault that occurred in the downtown OKC bus station, diagrams of the power and control dynamics, and diagrams of injuries commonly associated with strangulation. Easter will also be answering any questions that are posed, offering examples of how these investigations have played out in a courtroom and subject to cross-examination.
